Local bricklayers for repairs as well as new work
A lot of brickwork enquiries are for repairs rather than new builds: brickwork cracks, crumbling or spalled bricks, failed pointing and leaning garden walls. Brickwork repair starts with the cause. Cracks can come from settlement, rusting lintels, tree roots or a wall built without movement joints, and replacing bricks without dealing with that just moves the problem along.
New brickwork covers garden and boundary walls, brick steps, brick arches over openings and features, brick sheds and small outbuildings, and the brick-and-block shell of extensions. On every job we match brick, bond and mortar to what is already there so new work does not stand out.
What affects brickwork cost
Bricklayer cost depends on the length and height of wall, the brick chosen, the bond, foundations, access and how much old work has to come down first. A straight garden wall in a standard brick is a very different job from a curved wall with piers, coping and a brick arch. Our cost calculator gives a rough starting point, and a free estimate follows a site visit.
Brickwork questions
- Why is my brickwork white?
- White powdery marks are usually efflorescence: salts carried to the surface as water dries out of the brick or mortar. It is common on new walls and after wet weather. It often fades on its own, but if it keeps returning, look for the source of the water, such as failed pointing, a missing coping or a leaking gutter.
- Why is my brickwork turning green?
- Green staining is algae or moss, which grows where brickwork stays damp. Leaking gutters and downpipes, overflowing drains, shade and soil piled against a wall are the usual causes. Fixing the water source matters more than cleaning the face.
- Why is my brickwork going white after rain?
- That is usually efflorescence too. Rain soaks into the wall and, as it dries, dissolved salts are left on the face. Brushing it off dry is better than washing it, which can push more water into the wall.
- Why is my brick turning white in patches?
- Patches point to where water is getting in: under a dripping sill, below a cracked coping or around a leaking pipe. Repairing that detail usually stops the patch from coming back.
- Are you local bricklayers?
- Yes. We are based in Bidwell, Dunstable and work across Dunstable, Houghton Regis, Totternhoe, Harpenden, Wheathampstead and Redbourn.
